Gregory "Buck" Schultes, son of Michael Schultes and Barbara "Babette" Graf, was born on 8 Jul 1879 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. He died on 10 May 1963 at his home in

According to his WWI Draft Registration, Gregory was tall and of average build with grey eyes and brown hair.
Gregory "Buck" Schultes was born July 8, 1879 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is listed as Krekorio, age one, son of Barbara and Michael Schultes, in the 1880 census. If you say Gregory with a heavy German accent, doesn't it sound like Krekorio? The older children in this family were listed as Barbara, John, Sarah, Annie and Mary. I suspect they were all old enough to provide their names to the census taker. Gregory was only one year old and I suspect his mother provided his name.
On June 7, 1899, Gregory married Florence Frederick at St. Peter's Indepedent German Evangelical Church, Elm & Findley Sts. Hamilton County, Ohio. The marriage was performed by Rev. H. W. Pohlmeyer.

There were two children born from this marriage. Gregory Louis was born in 1899 and Earl Herman was born in 1902. When Gregory was born the family lived at 215 Mulberry Street. By the time Earl was born, they lived at 1619 Hughes. On the birth cards for both boys, obtained from the Blegen Library at the University of Cincinnati, the attending midwife was the same person, listed as Mrs. E. Yahnle for Gregory and Mrs. E Jahnel for Earl.
The marriage between Gregory and Florence ended in divorce after approximately 10 years and Florence left her two small children with their father. Gregory's sister, Margaret Schultes Schmidlin, who had no children of her own, assumed the child rearing responsibilities. She was affectionately referred to as "Aunt Nana" which means grandmother in German. Neither boy seemed to care very much for their father. They also did not seem to have any contact with their mother during this period. I have not found the 1910 census record for Florence under Frederick, Schultes or Whitford. She did remarry to Arthur Whitford and they moved to Piqua, OH. Florence did not have any more children with Arthur. She became bedridden with polio for the last ten years of her life. Arthur stayed with her and took care of her. He is said to have been a very kind and gentle man.
Gregory is living with his mother, Barbara Schultes, in the 1910 census but states that he is married. Gregory and Earl, listed as sons of Barbaria, are actually her grandsons, the children of Gregory and Florence Frederick Schultes. Gregory's father is still living in 1910 but has not been located in census records. Family history tells us that Gregory's father lost a leg. He died of Arterio Scherosis. Could he have been disabled and living in a hospital/nursing home environment?
In 1913, Gregory's father died and Gregory handled the funeral arrangements with Busse & Borgmann Co. His work phone number at Vogeler Drug Co. was 4990.

Sometime prior to 1914, Gregory married Elsie K. Aufdermarsch. There was one daughter born of this union. Elsie "Marie" is the name listed on her birth record held at Blegen Library at the University of Cincinnati, but in the 1920 census she is listed as Marie E.
In the 1920 U.S. Census, Gregory and Elsie K. were living at 2334 McMicken Avenue in Cincinnati, Ohio with Elsie's father, Henry D. "Hy" Aufdermarsch. Gregory is working as a stock keeper for a drug company. Earl, age 17, is living with them and working as a laborer in the candy industry. Marie is 7 years old.
By 1930, Gregory is a traveling salesman with Hale-Justice Company, located at 217 E. 6th Street. He is living at 2284 Wolff with his wife and daughter, Marie, who is working as a stenographer at 409 Dixie Terminal, Bldg. H., as listed in the Cincinnati City Directory. Only working members of society, non-working head of household or widows who are head of household are listed in the City Directory. Gregory is listed as head of household and the Aufdermarsh's are living with them.
Kenny Warner, son of Marie Schultes Warner, remembers Grandpa Buck living with them when he was a child. Kenny says he woke up one day and Grandpa was gone.
Audrey S. Schultes remembers that Grandpa Gregor lived with Uncle Julius and Aunt Eleanor when he was older. Eleanor was the daughter of Mary Schultes Welecke/Willechi, Gregory's sister. He and Julius and Eleanor Alf had been close friends for many years.
Per Audrey Schultes: During his later years, Julius Alf dealt with severe depression and was under a "suicide watch". Grandpa Gregor was fixing Julius lunch one afternoon. Julius asked Gregor to go out to the garden for a tomato for their lunch. Gregor went and as soon as he got outside he heard a gunshot. Julius Alf had committed suicide. Julius was a prominent optician in Cincinnati and the incident made headline news. Aunt Elenor had gone to the office to work on payroll and heard the news over the radio at work.
Donnie Bernhard, son of Emma Schultes Bernhard, another of Gregor's sisters, thinks that Julius had bought a farm in Indiana (Audrey thinks the farm was in Kentucky) and he wanted to move there. Eleanor was a very "formal" person. Everything about her was perfect, her hair, her clothes, her house. Eleanor did not want to move to the farm and this may have been part of the reason Julius committed suicide. According to Donnie, he went to the basement to do the deed so he didn't mess up the house and furnishings and Eleanor wouldn't have to clean it up.
Ray R. Schultes remembers that Grandpa Buck was hit by a car. He died after being taken to the hospital.

Gregory is living with his mother in the 1910 census but states that he is married. Gregery and Earl, listed as sons of Barbaria, are actually her grandsons, the children of Gregory and Florence Frederick Schultes. Gregory's father is still living in 1910 but has not been located in census records. Family history tells us that Gregory's father lost a leg. He died of Arterio Scherosis. Could he have been disabled and living in a hospital/nursing home environment?
In 1913, Gregory's father died and Gregory handled the funeral arrangements with Busse & Borgmann Co. His work phone number at Vogeler Drug Co. was 4990.

Sometime prior to 1914, Gregory married Elsie K. Aufdermarsch. There was one daughter born of this union. Elsie "Marie" is the name listed on her birth record held at Blegen Library at the University of Cincinnati, but in the 1920 census she is listed as Marie E.

In the 1920 U.S. Census, Gregory and Elsie K. were living at 2334 McMicken Avenue in Cincinnati, Ohio with Elsie's father, Henry D. "Hy" Aufdermarsch. Gregory is working as a stockkeeper for a drug company. Earl, age 17, is living with them and working as a laborer in the candy industry. Marie is 7 years old.
By 1930, Gregory is a traveling salesman with Hale-Justice Company, located at 217 E. 6th Street. He is living at 2284 Wolff with his wife and daughter, Marie, who is working as a stenographer at 409 Dixie Terminal, Bldg. H., as listed in the Cincinnati City Directory. Only working members of society or widows who are head of household are listed in the City Directory.

Kenny Warner, son of Marie Schultes Warner, remembers Grandpa Buck living with them when he was a child. Kenny says he woke up one day and Grandpa was gone.
Audrey S. Schultes remembers that Grandpa Gregor lived with Uncle Julius and Aunt Elenor when he was older. Eleanor was the daughter of Mary Schultes Welecke/Willechi, Gregor's sister. He and Julius and Elenor Alf had been close friends for many years.
During his later years, Julius Alf dealt with severe depression and was under a "suicide watch". Grandpa Gregor was fixing Julius lunch one afternoon. Julius asked Gregor to go out to the garden for a tomato for their lunch. Gregor went and as soon as he got outside he heard a gunshot. Julius Alf had committed suicide. Julius was a prominent optician in Cincinnati and the incident made headline news. Aunt Elenor heard the new over the radio at work.
Ray R. Schultes remembers that Grandpa Buck was hit by a car. He died after being taken to the hospital.
Cemetery records seem to support this memory.

Elsie was born on 7 Mar 1888 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH, died on 24 Sep 1941 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio at age 53, and was buried on 27 Sep 1941 in Vine Street Hill Cemetery, Cincinnati, OH. They had one daughter: Elsie "Marie".
